JCL's HTML & JavaScript Tutorial, created March, 1997, was once a small JavaScript site consisting of 3 tutorials (JavaScript Alerts, Confirms, & Prompts) with no vistors. After 4 HTML tutorials had been created, I decided that it was time to submit it to as many search engines as possible. I accomplished this by going to Submit It. I then successfully registered my page at AltaVista, but had trouble submitting my page to Yahoo. I submitted it 3 times, but I don't think it ever got put in with the other web pages on Yahoo. After submitting it to countless search engines, I signed up for LinkExchange. Gradually, my site began to increase in popularity reaching 34 visitors (not hits) on very good days and maintaining an average of 15 - 20 visitors/day. After creating 14 tutorials and calling them all new, I decided to redo my main page. I purposely avoided using JavaScript except for my pull-down menu in order to allow those browsers that couldn't read JavaScript to be able to surf through the site at ease. In addition, I added a page to win awards from me, won two awards myself (One of them was created by a site which mysteriously disappeared, but I still keep it because it looks cool), created a JavaScript color code, cut down the loading time for the page, and tried to create CGI scripts. CGI turned out to be a hard task, and I put it off for awhile. Then suddenly, my site decreased in visitors even after I added 6 or 8 new tutorials and updated others. Becoming bored with continuous programming and answering e-mail and having little time between camp, I decided to take a break from this stuff. Sometime at the end of June '97, I started receiving about 50 e-mails/day from Highway Talk without even signing up! I began to receive countless e-mails with questions and answers regarding web page programming. Becoming frustrated, I tried unsuccessfully to get my address off the e-mail list. After repeating this step two more times, I gave up. I then faced 9th grade and decided to allow my site to remain static. Now, at the end of June '98, I believed I was ready to go back to working on JCL's HTML & JavaScript Tutorial. I redid the page again, making it look even better. I even added a menu which I believe no one has ever created before because this menu allows the user to get more options by clicking on the "+" and receive the first set of options again by pressing on the "-" which takes the place of the plus. If you have a web browser that allows for "image morphing," and haven't played around with it, try it out. I also checked my e-mail account to find over 4,000 messages! I also finally added an "About Page" paragraph and made the site utilize much more JavaScript since most people's browsers can now read it. For the people who don't have a browser which can make the menu work properly, I added all the links along the bottom of the main page. I plan to get a new e-mail account, but at the present time, I'm working on the site. Lastly, I plan to add an "Important Events" timeline to accompany this paragraph and I hope to receive more visitors (The probable reason for the decrease in visitors was that I forgot to add meta keywords to my page when I disposed of the old main page making it harder for people to find my site).
